Inspiration of the Week

It takes a lot to get me to do something on my own that puts me “out there” for criticism. Doing something to protect or stand up for someone ELSE, that’s easy for me… but standing up for myself…well I’m my own worst critic & tend to beat myself up about anything. Being molested as a very young child, verbal abuse at home & being picked on countless times in grade school all did awful things to any self esteem I had. I especially remember being made fun of at a school dance in 5th grade. I pretty much NEVER dance. Like…ever. When watching other dancers–especially genres like salsa, meringue & hip hop– I’ve felt a great desire to learn. The same with music–there are so many songs that stir up the desire to dance, but I’ve always kept it all inside. So hitting up the local pole studio for a lesson was pretty impressive for me! All that to say this…I am going to do a weekly post that features someone in the dancing/music/arts worlds that had a hand in inspiring me to DANCE! Here is my first IOTW post.

TaraKarina was the first person I had ever seen pole dance. I had no idea there was any kind of pole dance that didn’t involve nudity, lonely men, tips and a bar. Pole fitness? Pole art? There is such a thing? The first thing I noticed was how much core strength it must take to do some of the inverts and climbs she was doing. I had just started pilates & knew the simplest looking moves can take a lot more than you’d first think. I read a bit of her info on her youtube… She had taught herself from youtube videos and later the online lessons at . Wow…impressive! I took a few instructed pilates lessons at a pilates studio & once I had my form down I taught myself more through youtube videos as I advanced. (For my favorite FREE pilates workouts online, go HERE.) Thinking to myself as I’m watching, “Hmmm I bet I could do this after a class or two for proper form…” But where would I get a pole from? They make poles to install at home?? Reading more in her youtube profile…yup, apparently they do! (See previous post for more pole info.) TaraKarina gave me a different perspective on pole dance and what it can be. She showed me it is her hobby, and a fun one at that!

Here is my all-time favorite video on her youtube.

Thank you, TaraKarina! You are an amazing poler! 🙂

About Kat

If I had to choose one word to describe myself, it would be eclectic. I like a little bit of everything and I do a little bit of everything. :) Some of my current favorite things to do are: spend time with my husband and daughters, work my home based business (, play with makeup and nail polish, work out (pilates, Jillian Michaels DVDs & pole dance/fitness), play Halo Reach & Zombies (COD) on xbox 360, living on the lake & blogging! I love my family more than life itself...and I will guard and protect them with my life. I've also learned to start standing up for myself (thanks to one of my mentors!) and tell people to back off when they try to hurt me or my family. My childhood abuse no longer defines me, thanks to my Savior Jesus Christ...and as a result of giving ALL parts of my life to Him, I have more peace and joy than I can ever remember having!
